SYMCRAFT: When Textile Scraps Become the Starting Point for New Crafts

The EU project SYMCRAFT focuses on the question of how industrial waste materials can be transformed into new value through collaboration between businesses, artisans, and designers. The textile sector, in particular, shows great potential in this regard: fabric scraps, yarns, selvedges, technical textiles, and surplus materials do not necessarily have to remain waste. They can serve as a starting point for new products, creative experiments, and sustainable collaboration models.

A central tenet of SYMCRAFT is not to view the circular economy solely from a technical or industrial perspective. Rather, the goal is to purposefully integrate the expertise of the skilled trades and creative design. Where knowledge of materials, a spirit of experimentation, and practical experience come together, new possibilities for managing resources emerge.

Voices from the World of Skilled Trades

The participating artisans and creatives emphasize how important direct access to materials is. Scrap materials cannot be assessed based on their appearance alone. Their quality, texture, durability, color, and workability only become apparent through hands-on work. Materials are sorted, combined, sewn, felted, woven, taken apart, or reassembled.

This makes it clear that cooperation between industry and the skilled trades involves more than just the transfer of leftover materials. It requires dialogue, trust, and a shared understanding of the needs on both sides. Companies have access to material flows, production scraps, and technical information. Skilled tradespeople and designers contribute their expertise in form, craftsmanship, functionality, and creative potential.

It is precisely this connection that is essential to SYMCRAFT: Waste materials do not automatically become new products. Only through knowledge, creativity, and collaboration can they be transformed into prototypes, small-batch productions, or new business models.

Mia Trotz: Design Based on Available Materials

The work of Mia Trotz offers a particularly vivid example. Her approach does not begin with a finished design for which she then searches for the right material. Rather, she starts with the material at hand: textile scraps, used or surplus technical clothing items, pieces of fabric, yarns, and individual fragments of material are analyzed, combined, and gradually transformed into a new form.

The focus here is not on repurposing in the sense of mere “reuse.” What matters most is the creative process. Pattern pieces, colors, textures, and traces of the original material are deliberately incorporated and transformed into a design of their own. The material’s origin remains recognizable, but is not seen as a flaw—rather, as a quality.

The result is a collection of designs that demonstrate just how sophisticated and contemporary circular design can be. Using existing resources, Mia Trotz creates new textile objects characterized by a clean aesthetic, artisanal precision, and a visible history of the materials.

Cooperation as the Key to a Circular Economy

The SYMCRAFT initiatives in Austria demonstrate that the circular economy can be particularly effective when different areas of expertise come together. Companies, craft businesses, designers, and educational and outreach institutions can work together to find ways not only to reduce waste but also to actively use it as a resource.

This requires practical testing: Which materials are suitable for which applications? What quantities are available? What legal, organizational, and economic issues need to be clarified? And how can partnerships be structured in a way that is sustainable for all parties involved?

SYMCRAFT provides a framework for this. The project brings stakeholders together, supports pilot initiatives, and develops models that are intended to be useful beyond individual experiments. At the heart of it all is a central goal: to integrate industrial waste into new cycles through the power of craftsmanship and creative design.

Working with textile scraps highlights the potential of this approach. It shows that sustainable innovation does not always start with new raw materials, but often with what is already available—and with the people who recognize new possibilities in them.
